Take a drive and experience Cowra's fascinating history, from the days of steam trains to the largest Prisoner Of War breakout in modern military history. Cowra is famous for its World War II POW camp where Japanese prisoners attempted a massive breakout in 1944. Places of interest include the POW Hologram Theatre and cemeteries, the magnificent Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre and the Conimbla National Park.
Cowra has also become the centre of hot air ballooning in New South Wales and Canowindra describes itself as 'The Balloon Capital of Australia'. The Water Slide at Wyangala Waters State Park is also a popular activity.
